Chapter 6
Paying for a vehicle you follow
Some private vehicles are free to follow and some carry a monthly charge. Which one it is, what it costs and when it falls due are set by the operator rather than by MageRide — and the money goes to them, not to us.
Step 1
Every private vehicle is set to Free or Paid by whoever runs it. The setting is called Service payment. Free is what an office or a staff transport usually chooses: you follow the vehicle and there is no payment screen at all.
Step 2
Paid means a monthly amount per subscriber. The operator sets it, and may set a different amount for different people on the same vehicle, so there is no MageRide price to quote you — the app shows your amount before you owe it.
Step 3
Your subscriptions live under My subscriptions in the menu. Each card shows the vehicle, whether it is Paid or Free, the amount and the date it is next due, a Pay button, a history button and a small cross for unsubscribing.
Step 4
The billing cycle is either the first of the month or the anniversary of the day you joined — subscribe on 5 June and the next payment is due on 6 July. The card says which one applies to you.
Step 5
Tap Pay and choose how. LankaQR opens your banking app with the amount already filled in; you can scan the operator’s LankaQR code instead; or you can make an ordinary bank transfer and attach a photograph of the slip.
Step 6
A transfer shows as awaiting verification until the operator confirms it at their end. Cash goes to whoever collects it, and only the owner can mark it received — after which your card says Paid and the payment appears in your history.
Step 7
The history button lists every month: the date, the method, the amount and where it stands.
Step 8
Unsubscribing is that small cross. Confirm it and you lose sight of the vehicle almost immediately; coming back means sending a fresh request and waiting for it to be accepted again, as in chapter 5.

Questions about this
- What does following a private vehicle cost?
- It depends on the vehicle. Some owners share access free — a company staff bus, for instance. Others carry a monthly subscription, currently around Rs 300 per vehicle with the first month free. The app shows the exact amount before you subscribe.
- Can anyone watch my private vehicle?
- No. A Mode B vehicle is visible only to people its owner has granted access to, one request at a time, and the owner can withdraw that access whenever they choose.
